From Piemonte to the South Coast: Tenuta il Finale at the South Coast Wine Festival

What happens when the rolling hills of Piemonte meet the South Coast of England? You bring the wines of Tenuta il Finale to the South Coast Wine Festival.
For us, wine is about more than what is inside the bottle. It is about the places wines come from, the people who make them and the conversations that happen when a bottle is opened and shared. The South Coast Wine Festival brought together wine lovers, producers and enthusiasts for a celebration of wine, and we were delighted to be part of it, bringing a taste of our small estate in Piemonte to a new audience.
Tenuta il Finale is a boutique wine estate in the heart of Piemonte, in north-west Italy, where vineyards cover the hills around Castagnole delle Lanze and Costigliole d’Asti. It is a landscape defined by rolling hills, historic villages, vineyards and a long tradition of winemaking. This is a region where the character of the land is deeply connected to the wines that are produced here, and where native grape varieties have been cultivated for generations.
Barbera is particularly important to both the area and to our estate. Some of our vineyards are home to old Barbera vines, including vines that are around 60 years old. These mature vineyards are an important part of what makes our wines distinctive. They represent a connection to the land that has developed over decades, with each generation contributing to the story. At the South Coast Wine Festival, we had the opportunity to share some of that story - one glass at a time.
For visitors discovering Tenuta il Finale for the first time, Barbera was naturally an important part of the conversation. Barbera is one of Piemonte’s great native grape varieties, naturally high in acidity, full of vibrant fruit and capable of producing wines that combine freshness with depth and structure. At Tenuta il Finale, we make several expressions of Barbera, allowing the character of different vineyard sites and winemaking approaches to come through.
Our Barbera d’Asti DOCG showcases the variety’s classic combination of freshness, dark fruit and structure, while Barbera il Sogno comes from a single vineyard planted with approximately 60-year-old vines. Our Terroir Series takes the idea of vineyard expression a step further, exploring how differences in terroir can influence wines made from the same grape variety. For wine lovers, this creates an opportunity to taste not simply a grape variety, but a sense of place.
Although Barbera may be at the heart of Tenuta il Finale, Piemonte has a remarkable diversity of native grape varieties. Our wines also include Monferrato Dolcetto and Langhe Arneis, alongside our Piemonte rosato wines. Dolcetto offers a very different expression of the region, with its own combination of fruit, freshness and character, while Arneis provides a fresh and elegant white wine that makes a wonderful introduction to the lighter side of Piemonte. Our rosato wines bring another dimension altogether — fresh, vibrant and made for relaxed drinking, whether enjoyed alongside food or simply shared with friends.
The South Coast Wine Festival was the perfect environment to explore this diversity. One of the great pleasures of a wine festival is that you can arrive looking for one particular wine and leave having discovered something completely different. You can talk to the people behind the wines, ask questions, compare different regions and styles, and perhaps find a new favourite. For us, these moments of discovery are one of the reasons we enjoy bringing Tenuta il Finale to wine festivals and events.
Wine, of course, is best enjoyed with food, and Piemonte has an extraordinary food culture of its own. From its famous hazelnuts and white truffles to regional cheeses, cured meats, pasta and rich northern Italian dishes, food is an essential part of life in the region. Barbera’s bright acidity makes it particularly versatile at the table, working naturally with everything from pizza and pasta to grilled meats and richer dishes. It is this relationship between wine, food and people that lies at the heart of our approach to wine.
Events such as the South Coast Wine Festival also give us the opportunity to talk about the people behind Tenuta il Finale. Our estate was founded by David Mogford, who turned his passion for Piemonte and its wines into a new chapter in life. Today, Tenuta il Finale is a small estate built around a simple philosophy: respect the land, work with good fruit and make wines that express where they come from.
We farm approximately seven hectares across several vineyard sites, working with native Piemonte varieties and old vines. Our grapes are hand-harvested and our winemaking is deliberately considered, allowing the character of the fruit and vineyards to remain at the centre. We have also achieved SQNPI certification, reflecting our commitment to responsible vineyard management and sustainability. For us, caring for the land is an important part of making wine, because the vineyards we tend today are the foundation for what can be created tomorrow.
Perhaps the greatest pleasure of attending a wine festival is seeing people discover something new. For some visitors, it may have been their first taste of Barbera. For others, Piemonte may already have been a favourite wine region, and the festival offered an opportunity to discover a small producer they had not encountered before. Either way, sharing the story of Tenuta il Finale is what makes these events so worthwhile.
A wine can travel thousands of miles from vineyard to glass, but its sense of place can travel with it. When you taste a bottle of Tenuta il Finale, we want you to be able to imagine the vineyards of Piemonte - the hills, the old vines, the changing seasons and the people who care for them.
The South Coast Wine Festival gave us the opportunity to bring a little piece of Piemonte to the English coast. We loved meeting wine lovers, talking about our wines and sharing the story behind our estate. For us, it reinforced something we have always believed: great wine is about connection. Connection to the land, connection to tradition, connection to the people who make it and, ultimately, connection to the people who drink it.
From our vineyards in the hills of Piemonte to wine lovers on the South Coast, we are proud to continue sharing the story of Tenuta il Finale.
